The Truth About Dentures

Replacements for lost teeth is not a new concept. Even in 700 B.C., dentures were produced using ivory and bone. Unfortunately, this level of technology was lost until the 1800s. During medieval times, dentures were not an option, or even considered. Missing teeth were even expected-even nobles had gaps between their teeth! Queen Elizabeth I filled the holes with cloth to enhance her appearance in public!

When dentures were considered and installed, they were hand carved. They were held in place by silk threads. Technology didn't increase for false teeth because the materials needed for them were hard to find. Teeth were taken from the deceased or from poor people would sell their own teeth. These teeth would soon become rotten or decayed. Wealthy people often had dentures made from silver, gold, or mother of pearl. Conditions began to improve in the 1700s when plaster of paris was introduced. It was used to make a mold of the patient's. Because of this great innovation, dentures were able to fit better.

Today, prosthodontists are dental professionals that specilize in creating custom, authentic looking dentures for everyone. Dentures are made from plastic or ceramic. The commonwealth of Houston has a large number of dental professionals specializing in dentures, and a variety of payment plans and financing options so everyone can have access to a great looking smile.
